Film Tax Legislation
Despite the state budget crunch, the Legislature approved raising
Louisiana's film tax incentives to 30 percent and making them
permanent. Sherry McConnell with the state Department of Economic
Development says the industry was watching the progress of this
legislation. Governor Jindal has yet to sign the bill.

June 2009 Was One of The Dryest Junes In State History
Despite heavy showers yesterday, the shortage of rain this month has been one for the record books--but was it THE dryest June ever? State climatologist Barry Keim says June 2009 comes in at the 3rd dryest ever--behind June 1930 with 2/3 of an inch of rain, and the 1936-record holder--just a half an inch. Keim says ordinarily, June is a fairly soggy month.

Seat Belt Legislation
Governor Jindal has signed a bill that will require all passengers
in cars and trucks to wear their seat belts--including those in the
back seat. Louisiana State Police lobbied in support of the
legislation. Lieutenant Doug Cain says too many backseat passengers
die because they aren't buckled in.

Woman Arrested For Drug Possession
A Patterson woman trying to hide drugs between her feet was
arrested this past weekend. John Sonnier with the St. Mary Sheriff's
Office says Narcotics Task Force Agents spotted a suspect vehicle
parked in the roadway. In it was 30-year old Heather Durapau. When
she was asked to exit her vehicle, an agent noticed she was
standing attempting to hide something between her feet. That
something was drugs. She was arrested.

2,000 People Still Living In FEMA Trailers
A month into the 2009 hurricane season, more than 2,000 Louisiana
families are still living in FEMA trailers--many of them since after
Hurricane Katrina in 2005. FEMA Gulf Coast coordinator Janet Woodka
says new funds are now available to help solve the housing problems
keeping those families in trailers.
Woodka says the first priority is getting victims of Katrina and
Rita out of the trailers and into permanent housing, then moving on
to those hit by Gustav and Ike.

 The U.S. Department of Education awards a 170-million-dollar grant to a consortium of 26 states, including Louisiana, to develop new common assessments for public school students.

DOTD Issues Labor Day Travel Advisory
 The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) today advised drivers of upcoming work schedules for interstate and major road projects throughout Louisiana for the Labor Day weekend (Saturday, September 4, through Monday, September 6).

One Dead In Early Morning Shooting
 Baton Rouge police report that officers responded to a shooting about 3:30 Thursday morning in the 1500 block of North Marque Ann Drive where they found a black male lying in a parking lot who had been shot.
