UL-Lafayette To Host 6th Annual Home School Information Program

Home school students looking to go to college will have an opportunity to learn about information on admissions, dual enrollment opportunities, scholorships, TOPS and financial aid March 18 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.  The University is hosting its 6th annual home school information program for high school-aged students and their parents from 1:30 to 3:30.  The event will take place in the Bayou Bijou theater in the Student Union.  Parking is available in front of the Union and in the new parking garage on Taft street.  For more information, contact April Flugence at aflugence@louisiana.edu or call (337) 482-5923

LCG Promoting Grant Program Benefitting Local Artists And Cultural Organizations

The Awards and Community Arts Community Development department is announcing the 2010 Partnership Awards and Community Arts Funding Grant recipients.  The AcA will disperse over 17-thousand-dollars to 9 organizations ranging from Crave the Wave, with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Acadiana to Bead-Dazzle Your Mothers with the Children's Museum of Acadiana.  These partnership awards are a grant program promoted by the Lafayette Consolidated Government to support projects that will enhance the cultural life of the community and promote local artists and cultural organizations.

Guns In Church Bill Pre-Filed For Spring Legislative Session

A bill pre-filed for the spring legislative session would allow
legally licensed concealed weapons in churches. The bill is
sponsored by Haughton Representative Henry Burns, who says the
recent proliferation of church shootings is what prompted the
bill. Burns says the bill will not mandate weapons on church permises, but
give will give them the ability to have onsite armed security if
they feel it necessary.

Dozens Of Animals Found In Terrible Conditions At St. Mary Parish Farm

Deputies in St. Mary Parish responded to an animal cruelty
complaint, in a rural part of the parish, to find dozens of head of
livestock suffering from neglect. Spokesman Detective John Sonnier
says prosecutors are considering whether to file animal cruelty
charges against the owner. He says deputies were shocked that anyone
would keep animals in such neglect.
A veterinarian will examine all the remaining animals and save as
many as possible. The location of the farm and owner's name are
being withheld for now.

Acadiana Pro-Life Activists Keeping An Eye On Abortion Bill

Acadiana pro life activists are keeping a close eye on a first of a kind state bill that would restrict abortions based on the pain a fetus might feel.
  If passed the Nebraska bill would outlaw most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
  Leaders of the Center for Reproductive Rights are concerned the proposed law is an attempt to get the abortion issue back before the Supreme Court.
  Louisiana is one of six states which require that pregnant women be told an abortion could cause pain for the fetus...according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
