UL Chimp Lab Targeted Ohio-based animal-rights group Stop Animal Exploitation Now has filed a request with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate UL Lafayette's primate research center in New Iberia. Michael Budke, director of the organization, says three chimps, four Rhesus moneys and two infant non-human primates died in recent years because of veterinary neglect. Doctor Bob Stewart, vice president of research at UL, says the New Iberia Research Center receives regular USDA and FDA inspections and has not received formal notification of an investigation in response to the group's complaints. Stop Animal Expoitation Now has also pushed for investigations at Duke, the University of Alabama, the University of Minnesota, the Univresity of Washington, and Cal-Davis. Budkie says UL's facility isn't the only one in Louisiana being targeted by the group. Thursday, January 29, 2009 5:20 PM

Louisiana's lone Democrat in the House, Charlie Melancon, voted for the bailout, because it contains billions for Louisiana infrastructure, education and storm recovery.
