>>Bali Warns Of Possible New Year's Eve Attack

(Jakarta)  --  There is a warning from the U.S. Embassy in Indonesia about a possible terrorist attack planned for today on the resort island of Bali.  The warning came in a statement posted on the U.S. Embassy's Web site, and quotes the island's governor.  That, however, is being disputed by the governor's office.  It says it never issued such a warning.  The embassy says it issued the warning verbatim, but has no other information about a possible attack.  Attacks on Bali in 2002 killed 202 people, and this year suicide bombers attacked two hotels in Jakarta. 

>>Rush Limbaugh's Staff Issues Statement

(Honolulu, HI)  --  Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh is recovering in a Honolulu hospital after suffering chest pains on Wednesday.  A statement posted online by his staff says Limbaugh is "resting comfortably" after being taken to the hospital and appreciates the prayers and well wishes he's received.  Limbaugh was reportedly in serious condition when admitted to the hospital, but his website makes no mention of his current status.  He is vacationing in Hawaii at the same time as two high power Democrats -- President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

>>Security Report Due Today On Undie Bomber

(Washington, DC)  --  The country's air security flaws will be noted in a top-level report ordered by President Obama.  Today is the deadline for submit the report to the White House.  Obama wants to know how a Nigerian national with ties to al Qaeda who was banned in Britain could get on the Detroit-bound plane with a bomb in his underwear.  The White House assigned Obama's homeland security and counterrorism advisor John Brennan to the task.  It's anticipated he'll call for a massive makeover of U.S. intelligence operations. 

>>New Year's Eve Security A Lead-In To 9-11 Trials

(New York, NY)  --   The security provided during New Year's Eve in New York City's Times Square could be considered a carbon copy of plans to provide security in Manhattan during the upcoming trials of suspected 9-11 plotters.  Police will use many of the same procedures used at other big public events.  Police have unmarked mobile units parked on adjacent streets and have concrete barriers in place.  The ranks of police on duty for New Year's Eve have also swelled.

>>Deadline Nears For Time Warner Cable And News Corp

(Undated)  --  The clock is ticking as a New Year's Eve midnight deadline puts Time Warner Cable and News Corp. on the hot seat to work out a new deal on a contract.  The "Los Angeles Times" reports that there's a growing possibility that millions of Time Warner subscribers could see Fox shows vanish from their television screens.  At issue is so-called retransmission consent.  Fox wants Time Warner Cable to cough up about a dollar for each subscriber on a monthly basis to carry its local TV stations.  Time Warner has offered about 30 cents per subscriber.

>>Appeals Court Unplugs Apple iPod Lawsuit

(Undated)  --  A federal appeals court in San Francisco turned a deaf ear to a lawsuit over the volume on Apple iPods.  Two plaintiffs had sued, hoping to start a class-action lawsuit to get their money back.  They claimed the iPod lets them turn up the volume to earsplitting levels that can damage their hearing.  Anything above about 85 decibels is considered dangerous and the popular gadget can crank up the volume to about 115 decibels.

Senator Grassley Expects Partisanship In Health Bill Negotiations

(Washington, DC)  --  U.S. Senator Charles Grassley said Wednesday he expects to serve on a joint House and Senate conference committee being put together to reconcile competing versions of a federal healthcare overhaul.  However, the Iowa Republican said he does not expect to have any meaningful input on the final bill.  Instead, he thinks Democrats will meet behind closed doors and then bring out a healthcare reform bill without seeking input from Republicans.  Grassley expects the conference committee to begin its work as early as January 19th.

Lose Weight, Save Money Top New Year's Resolutions Lists

(New York, NY)  --  Topping the list of 2010 resolutions are losing weight and saving money.  That's according to a new Harris Interactive poll for Dorthy.com -- an online service that helps people meet their goals.  Overall, 63-percent of respondents are hoping to drop a few pounds and 58-percent would like to save or invest their money.  Women are more concerned about their physical figure, with nearly 70-percent wanting to see the numbers on the scale go down.  Meanwhile, men are paying more attention to the figures in their bank accounts, and 59-percent vow to try and make those numbers go up.  Other top resolutions don't have as sharp of a gender split.  Among both men and women, 25-percent want to develop stronger bonds with family members and friends, 18-percent want to travel more in 2010, and 16-percent want to donate more time and/or money to charity.  Nearly 15-percent want to quit smoking, while seven-percent intend to run a marathon or half marathon, or at least train for the challenge.

Weekly First-Time Unemployment Claims Fall

(Washington, DC)  --  Fewer Americans filed for first-time unemployment benefits in the past week ending December 26th.  The Labor Department today reported 432-thousand people filed for those benefits, down 22-thousand from the week before.  Analysts had been expecting a increase of about eight thousand.  The total number of claims for the week ending December 19th fell to just under five-million, down 57-thousand. 

Michigan leads the way in the largest increases in initial claims, as those were up by more than eight-thousand in the Great Lakes State, followed by California, Florida, Iowa and Missouri.  The biggest decline in first-time claims came in Tennessee, followed by Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina.  The highest insured unemployment rate is in Alaska at seven-point-four percent, with those figures for the week ending December 12th.

Tax Break Deadline For 2009 Is Today

(Orlando, FL)  --  Time is running out for Americans who want to reap the benefits of tax breaks this year.  Today is the deadline to take advantage of those benefits.  Along with being the last day for 2009 tax breaks, this is the busiest day of the year for making donations to charities.  The sagging economy has put a big pinch on charity giving, but some say they actually have seen an increase in donations.  A report by cfnews13.com in Orlando says Salvation Army officials say they received 79-million-dollars more in their kettle donations over last year.  The organization adds some people donate for the tax break, but must open their wallets just to help others.
